The Platypus Genome Unraveled
نویسنده
چکیده
The genome of the platypus has been sequenced, assembled, and annotated by an international genomics team. Like the animal itself the platypus genome contains an amalgam of mammal, reptile, and bird-like features.

Defensins and the convergent evolution of platypus and reptile venom genes.
When the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) was first discovered, it was thought to be a taxidermist's hoax, as it has a blend of mammalian and reptilian features. It is a most remarkable mammal, not only because it lays eggs but also because it is venomous. Rather than delivering venom through a bite, as do snakes and shrews, male platypuses have venomous spurs on each hind leg. The platypus ...
متن کاملThe Strange Case of Platypus Sex
OF PLATYPUS SEX The platypus, Ornithorhynchus anatinus, is clearly one of life’s strangest animals. It possesses a furry coat and, like a mammal, is warm blooded and produces milk to nourish its young, but it lacks teeth, has a bill, and lays eggs like a bird. The feet are webbed like those of a duck, and females have no nipples (offspring suck milk directly from the abdominal skin); males have...
متن کاملDraft Genome Sequence of Raffaelea quercivora JCM 11526, a Japanese Oak Wilt Pathogen Associated with the Platypodid Beetle, Platypus quercivorus
The Japanese oak wilt pathogen Raffaelea quercivora and the platypodid beetle, Platypus quercivorus, cause serious mass mortality of Quercus spp. in Japan. Here, we present the first draft genome sequence of R. quercivora JCM 11526 to increase our understanding of the mechanism of pathogenicity and symbiosis with the ambrosia beetle.
متن کاملConservation of small RNA pathways in platypus.
Small RNA pathways play evolutionarily conserved roles in gene regulation and defense from parasitic nucleic acids. The character and expression patterns of small RNAs show conservation throughout animal lineages, but specific animal clades also show variations on these recurring themes, including species-specific small RNAs. The monotremes, with only platypus and four species of echidna as ext...
متن کاملO-44: Characterisation of Monotreme CaseinsReveals Lineage Specific Expansion of an AncestralCasein Locus in Mammals
Background: One important reproductive characteristic of Mammals is the production of milk to nurse the neonate. In order to better understand the evolution of milk we have investigated gene expression in milk cells from monotremes which are the most ancient representative of the mammalian lineage. Materials and Methods: Using a milk cell cDNA sequencing approach we characterise milk protein se...
